If you like to play dodgeball and
live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area then
you've come to the right place. We play dodgeball about twice a month at the Dunford Recreation
Center in Mesquite, Texas. We'd love to see you at our next
game. Our dodgeball games are co-ed and all
ages are welcome. Special thanks to the City of
Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department for
hosting the games.
We pick teams from people who
show up and start playing. If 20 people show
up, then it's 10 on 10. If 50 people show up
then it's 25 on 25. The average game lasts
about 5 to 10 minutes, so if you get out,
you'll be back in the action soon for the next
game.
We have players from all walks of life,
from 2nd graders to senior citizens, boys, girls,
teenagers, college students, little league
sports teams, soccer moms, homeowners groups,
Dallas-area social clubs and fraternities to
name a few. The games are perfect for
celebrating birthdays! Bring your friends
and/or your enemies. Either way, you'll have a
lot of fun.
The games are a great workout, but
you won't even notice it until the next day.
Injuries are few. At worst, the standard
playground ball will sting a little. Mostly,
the guys throw at the guys and the girls throw
at the girls if you're worried about that. In
fact, dodgeball is safer than most other
sports in our estimation. (A softball isn't so
soft, for example.)
If you're playing, wear athletic style
clothing and bring a sportsmanlike attitude.
Arrive a few minutes early to pay at the front
desk and to warm up. And if you just want to
watch, there are bleachers in the gym, and
restrooms and an indoor sitting area with
tables outside of the gym. |

Smacking Good Time
A photographer and a
reporter from the Dallas Morning News attended the games for a news story.
The photographer even "embedded" himself for a couple of games, and was a
big hit! |
Ball
Room Blitz...
...That's
what Mesquite News reporter Daren Watkins had to say about Dodgeball II,
played August 4th, 2004. The Mesquite News story "Ball Room Blitz -- Movie
spawns interest in dodgeball -- the bygone junior high P.E. class
competition" appeared in the August 5th, 2004 edition.

1.
Captains pick teams and players take their sides. A
coach starts the game, usually with an "on your mark,
get set, go."
2. You can get an opposing player out by either hitting
them with a thrown ball (without the ball touching the
ground), or catching a ball thrown by an opposing
player.
3. After a ball is thrown, the ball becomes "dead" after
it hits a person or another object such as the floor,
wall (including the back wall), ceiling, basketball
goals, etc. For example, if a person throws a ball and
it hits a person and the ball bounces off that person
and is caught by another person then the ball is dead
after it hit the first person. The person that the ball
first hit is out, and even though the ball was caught by
another person, the person who threw it is not out since
the ball was dead when caught. If a ball hits a person and bounces up, then the person
that the ball hit must catch the ball in order to get
the other person out and to avoid being out.
4. A person may block a thrown ball with a held ball,
but if that ball is knocked out of their hands and hits
the floor, then that person (who was holding the ball)
is out.
5. There is a "no man's land in the middle of the court.
Players on both sides may advance to the opponent's
basketball free throw line. (A yellow line extends from
both sides of the free throw line.)
6. A player can throw a standard size ball from anywhere
on the court, up to the opponent's free throw line. We
usually have several smaller balls that can only be
thrown from the player's side of the court (marked by
the basketball half-court line.) A player may not, at
any time, advance beyond the opponent's free throw line.
7. Games are usually played as "once out, always out"
for the game. However, some games are played where if a
person catches a ball and gets an opposing player out,
then a person who is already out on the catcher's team
can come back into play. First one out is the first one
back in. The player returning to play is allowed to
reestablish themselves on the court when coming off the
bench.
8. Head shots are allowed, but strongly discouraged on
women and children. Stronger players are urged to "take
it easy" on weaker or younger players.
9. Players are under the honor system and are required
to leave the field of play if out. Usually, the player
is the one who knows better than anyone if they are out
or not.
10. The Commissioner of Dodgeball is the final rule on
any situation not covered by the above rules. |
